The star-shaped narcissus

The star-shaped narcissus (narcissus radiiflorus) is native to Austria in the areas of Styria, Lower- Austria, Upper- Austria and Carinthia. It is particularly prevalent in Ausseerland, due to the ideal climate and ground nutrients. The species prefers nutrient-poor earth and tolerates both wet and dry soil conditions. Depending on the altitude, the bulbs are in bloom between the middle of May and the middle of June. These colorfully blooming “narcissus meadows,” which characterize the landscape in the Ausseerland – Salzkammergut, are full of diverse species.  The splendor of the white flowers delights locals as well as visitors. Harvesting the flower stalks in no way endangers the plants or their progagation, as they reproduce by bulb. Quite the contrary, by picking the flowers, the vegetative reproduction of the narcissi is even more intensively spurred.
